Overview
In the 1880s, Leon Pinsker advocated a doctrine of "autoemancipation," saying that Jewish emancipation efforts in Europe were futile and that they should seek to found an independent Jewish state. The twelve essays in this book postulate that, when viewed in historical perspective, the concepts of emancipation and self-emancipation are not mutually exclusive. Among the other forerunners to Zionism Katz discusses are Zvi Hirsh Kalisher, Yehuda Alkaly, and Moses Hess.Book Details
