Children's Literature

As part of a series, "Major World Leaders," this excellent book is an easy-to-read, child-friendly biography. The book opens with an essay by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. that leads into President Carter's legacy. Short chapters and powerful photographs cover Carter's life from early childhood to the present day. Information is included about his weaknesses and strengths, while pointing out his many achievements. The author has managed to balance Carter's personal and political life giving honest, unbiased information. An extra bonus is the Chronology and Further Reading List found at the end of the book. This biography does an excellent job in portraying the private person behind the outgoing politician. Despite some shortcomings in his life, the message of Jimmy Carter's care and concern about social justice and human rights around the world comes through loud and clear. This is a well-written biography and the outstanding photographs add a richness to be enjoyed by all. 2003, Chelsea House Publishers, Josephs
