This title focuses on the life of a pious medieval maiden who was officially declared a saint in 1920. Saint Joan of Arc was born in 1412 in a French village called Domremy. Joan was an ordinary peasant girl until she began to hear the voices of angels and saints. These heavenly advisors told Joan she was chosen to lead the French people in their war against English domination. In time, Joan leads armies against her country's enemies with faith and ferocity, succeeding against all odds. But she pays the ultimate price for her courage. The teXt features challenging vocabulary and sentence structure while tracing Joan of Arc's life. Additional information about everyday life in the Middle Ages is given in sidebar format. A comprehensive indeX is given at the back of the book. Photographs of medieval artifacts, fine art reproductions and original watercolor paintings by Mike Bell amply illustrate this biography. Part of the "Dorling Kindersley Readers" series, level 4/proficient readers. 2000, Dorling Kindersley Publishing Inc., $12.95 and $3.95. Ages 8 to 10. Gr 3-5-Presented in a textbooklike manner, but without source notes or bibliography, this is a general account of Joan of Arc's religious beliefs, transformation into a soldier, victorious battles, and death. Sidebars appear on each page, along with full-color photographs and illustrations that illuminate the superstitions, customs, and daily life of the period. Diane Stanley's Joan of Arc (Morrow, 1998) is more detailed. For younger readers, Margaret Hodges's Joan of Arc (Holiday, 1999) and Josephine Poole's Joan of Arc (Knopf, 1998) are preferable for their picture-book qualities of layout, design, and painterly illustrations.-Tina Hudak, St. Bernard's School, Riverdale, MD Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
