Overview
Using rhetoric analysis, Phillips (English, Middle Tennessee State U.) examines epic innovations in Milton's (1608-74) poetry to show how he resolved the then current question of how Christian writers could use a pagan device. He finds that the poet, invoking the inspirational power of the Muses, distinguishes the Muse's pagan name from her Christian meaning and emphasized the latter increasingly during the course of his career.
