Overview

In this revised and expanded edition, Sudjic describes the works of minimalist architect John Pawson, based on interviews given over several years, sometimes while he was with clients such as Calvin Klein and Martha Stewart or working on commissions. Sudjic provides biographical information, and describes the architect's designs of galleries, an apartment for Anne Faggionato, stores for Calvin Klein and Jigsaw, the Obumex kitchen system, a lounge for Cathay Pacific Airlines, Young Vic theatre, Stewart's house as well as Pawson's, and a monastery. Interspersed throughout the text are striking full-page color photos and blueprints. Included is a list of works, but no bibliography. Sudjic is architecture critic for London's Observer. H. Scott Jolley

Less is definitely more to John Pawson. The über-Minimalist architect's creations include the stylish oasis that is the Cathay Pacific lounge in Hong Kong's frenzied Chek Lap Kok airport, and the austere Calvin Klein Madison Avenue flagship store in New York, where stone flooring that's worn to cashmere softness sets off precise displays of clothes. British writer Deyan Sudjic examines these and eight other elegant projects in John Pawson Works.
