Library Journal

Sumptuously illustrated on glossy stock paper, this book will fill a need in many libraries as interest in Jewish ornamental art continues to grow. As so much of Jewish religious life is centered in the home, the crafts portrayed in this book may seem almost commonplace; yet these objects show fine craftsmanship and artistic ability. The Outwaters, freelancers who compiled previous Schiffer guides to Ocean Liner Collectibles and Advertising Dolls, provide a fine overview of the subject. Following an introduction discussing the art of Jewish rituals and collecting practices, they divide the book into 15 chapters, most of which focus on specific holidays and traditions (e.g., Hanukkah, the Sabbath) and the objects associated with them. They provide price estimates for most objects shown and conclude with a resource guide. The primary audience for this volume is the everyday collector, and it will circulate well in any library serving a Jewish clientele.--Paul M. Kaplan, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
