Gr 4-8-These volumes will have the most appeal to readers who have more than a browsing interest in horses. In each one, solid information is delivered in dry, but clear writing. Jumping covers eventing, show jumping, and steeplechase competitions. This title and Western do a good job of explaining the rules governing the activities they cover and go into more detail than some single-volume encyclopedias on equestrian activities. Western Riding includes a quick history of the Pony Express; descriptions of rodeos; reining competitions; quarter-horse racing; and the horse in radio, television, and films (although the TV and movie cowboys get more mention than their trusty steeds). The plight of the wild mustangs is briefly touched upon and the relationship between the horse and Native Americans receives only a mention. Breeds covers the animal's evolution and extended members of its family. There are basic facts on 38 types from ponies to draft horses under the divisions of horses of the British Isles, Eastern Hemisphere, and Western Hemisphere. In all three titles, the mostly full-color photos are of good quality.
