School Library Journal

Gr 6-12-- Father Junipero Serra began his life on the island of Majorca, off the coast of Spain. It was from there in 1749, that he traveled to the New World to become a missionary. Some Native Americans protested his beatification in 1988, saying that he had contributed to the efforts of the Spanish to eliminate their traditions and religion. Clearly written and objective, the text presents an intriguing picture of the man's life. The numerous black-and-white illustrations and photographs add little, but the text has enough merit to make this a serviceable biography. --Marilyn Long Graham, Lee County Library System, Fort Myers, FL
