Synopsis

Joseph Lincoln was a 20th century writer of short stories, poems, and novels. Lincoln used the fictional town of Cape Cod as the setting for his stories. He believed that his stories should make the reader feel good about themselves and their neighbors. Lincoln's Cape Cod was a haven occupied by individuals of old Yankee stock, who gave his readers a break from the rapid modernization, urbanization, and industrialization going on around them. Keziah Coffin was published in 1909. Keziah was a seamstress who had just lost her brother. She was selling her things and getting ready to move to Boston. The story begins as she is packing and talking to a young girl who was helping her. The subject of the new minister and religion comes up in their conversation.
