Children's Literature
If you haven't visited a chain bookstore recently, you may not be aware that there are entire aisles now devoted to Manga comics. A comic form imported from Japan, Manga stories have hit this country with the force of a sledgehammer. Youngsters are fascinated by the big-eyed, highly specialized creatures that populate these works, and apparently, learning how to draw them has become as important as following their adventures. Author Christopher Hart seems to have built a career around Manga art instructional literature, and this volume follows his standard format. He begins with the "basics"how to draw typical Manga fantasy males and females, their facial features, body structures, and such vital details as hairstyles, "spectacular" eyes with intricate highlights, and "power fists." The point of the instruction is copying Hart's finished pieces, facilitated by step-by-step line drawings. There's nothing wrong with this approach, but the only thing unique about this book is its basic subject, Manga fantasy.
