This innovative knock-knock book starts with A and ends with Z. The index tells the reader where to find a joke commencing with a particular letter. There are over 104 knock-knock jokes, more than enough to appeal to almost every reader. Most of the jokes should be read aloud to assure comprehension. Also necessary is a prior knowledge of clichés, movies, commercials and the like. Example"Knock-knock," "Who's there?" "Hallways," "Hallways who?" "Hallways a bridesmaid, never the bride." If the punch line has been heard in a different context, the joke is easier to understand. The vocabulary may be difficult for a middle school student reading below grade level. The black-and-white sketches are humorous and just right for this knock-knock book. Although readers may not understand a joke immediately, it can be a good way to introduce various figures of speech. 200l, Sterling, $14.95 and $5.95. Ages 12 up. Reviewer:Jennie Jennings DeGenaro
