Johnson details how children growing up as part of the homeless population rarely attend school on a regular basis since they lack the proof of residence necessary for enrollment; those who do attend perform poorly because of stress, hunger, and sleeplessness. Chronicling the causes and consequences of homelessness, the author presents both long- and short-term ameliorative goals, but recognizes that there is no viable solution in sight before the end of the 20th century.
