School Library Journal

Gr 7-12-- Staggering statistics document the numbers of homeless individuals forced to endure this lifestyle because of poverty and, in the case of runaways, child abuse. Johnson details how children growing up as part of the homeless population rarely attend school on a regular basis since they lack the proof of residence necessary for enrollment; those who do attend perform poorly because of stress, hunger, and sleeplessness. Chronicling the causes and consequences of homelessness, the author presents both long- and short-term ameliorative goals, but recognizes that there is no viable solution in sight before the end of the 20th century. This exhaustive, grim report is recommended for secondary school libraries and young adult collections in public libraries. --Nancy E. Curran, Decatur Public Schools, IL
