Every effort has been make to make this general encyclopedia accessible and attractive to young readers. The vocabulary can easily be handled by second and third grade readers, while younger children who may enjoy the visual aspects of the book will need adult help in reading the text. Colorful drawings, photos, and maps fill the pages without creating clutter and enhance the simple alphabetical entries, from Africa to Zoo. Fact boxes that contain more information about a topic extend some of the entries, and all life-cycle stages are carefully numbered for ease in following the progression. "See Also" references are grouped under the heading "Find Out More," although sometimes very little extra information is imparted. While most topics are covered on one page, those that continue to the next page use the symbol of two children in the bottom right-hand corner. Generally useful for quick reference, this may also pique a child's curiosity to learn more. 2005 (orig. 1996), Kingfisher, Ages 5 to 9.
