Most people will never have the opportunity to view the North and South Poles, the "Ends of Earth," firsthand. A zoo, followed by perhaps a movie, would be the closest the average person can come to experiencing what it is like on the farthest points north and south on earth. The third best way to learn about and visualize such distant and extreme lands would be through the use of this wonderful book, part of Kingfisher's "Young Knowledge" series. Its pages are filled with spectacular photographs and realistic, eye-catching illustrations. Its contents are clearly outlined and cover everything from fish and penguins to scientists and snowmobiles. Basic concepts are explained as are the characteristics of the terrain, common animals and their habitat, and human inhabitants and the ways in which they adapt to their harsh surroundings. Exploration, scientific research, modern life, and the importance of protecting the wildlife are also addressed. The back of the book contains three different fun activities for children to tryβ including a mask that is supposed to be cut out of the last page. This would be a wonderful addition to any elementary school's library. I highly recommend this book. 2005, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 7 to 9.βLisa B. C. O'Connell
