Library Journal

Wiseman is a prolific knitwear designer and author of The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques and Knitted Sweaters for Every Season. Here, she turns her attention to knitting with wire using three different techniques: hand knitting, the Viking method (using an Allen wrench and a draw plate instead of knitting needles), and machine knitting. In recent years, finer wire in myriad colors has become available to knitters, making knitting with this stiff material more practical. What can one knit with wire aside from the occasional coat of mail? Think necklaces, bracelets, baskets, collars, and wire sculptures. A tremendous amount of information is packed into this small book, including a description of tools needed, choosing wire, making your own findings for jewelry, wire knitting techniques, and bead embellishment. Thirty projects (each graded for difficulty) allow the reader to experience the joys and challenges of working with wire to make ambitious projects like a lined, beaded purse or more simple objects such as an elegant silver bracelet. Warmly recommended for public and academic fine crafts collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
