Children's Literature

The same year Kobe Bryant graduated and was named National High School Player of the Year (1996), he signed a $3.5 million contract with the L.A. Lakers. That year he also became the youngest player (17) ever to appear in an NBA game. Growing up, Kobe watched his father play in the NBA and then in Europe. He found a game anywhere he could in Europe and the U.S.β€”sometimes getting the opportunity to play his Dad's teammates. The decision to skip college and go directly to the pros was a tough one. Conflicts developed with other players as Kobe's aggressive style was interpreted as "showboating." Double-teamed, he learned the hard way that he couldn't do all the scoring himself...he had to become a team player. Today, Kobe loves what he does and works hard to stay on top of his game. He has matured a lot personally, and at the same time, has grown as a player. Kobe currently has a six-year, $70 million contract with the Lakers. In his free time he shuns the nightclubs and parties that his teammates attend and spends time with family and friends. Supplemental materials include career highlights, a bibliography, an index and Kobe's fan letter address. 2001, Lerner Sports, $22.60 and $5.95. Ages 9 to 12. Reviewer: Chris Gill
