Children's Literature
In this addition to the "HolidayCount and Celebrate!" series, young readers are introduced to Kwanzaa and invited to count a variety of items associated with the holiday's celebration. The book begins with a brief discussion of the seven principles and seven symbols of Kwanzaa, including details about their pronunciation, translation, and meaning. Then the text takes readers through various aspects of the event with associated numbers: one mat, two ears of corn, three colors of Kwanzaa and so on, right up to ten people in a group celebrating Kwanzaa. Colorful photographs show children and adults enjoying Kwanzaa. The book also includes more information about Kwanzaa, a map of Africa, a list of vocabulary words and definitions, a list of resources for additional study, and an index. Overall, the book works very well. However, on the "Count Again!" pages, the photographs do not contain the appropriate number of items for some of the numbersthis is a missed opportunity to reinforce the skill.
