Children's Literature

That humans have built impressive structures like bridges or skyscrapers will come as no surprise to most people. What this Level B book in the "Yellow Umbrella Books" series does is help readers to imagine what the world looked like before people made changes to it. Pages are paired side by side in a before and after format. On the first page the author suggests what a section of land might have looked like before people made changes; on the second page the book shows the kind of changes that have taken place. For example, one photograph shows a river with no bridge, while the opposing page includes a river scene with a bridge. The author also encourages readers to use their imagination to think about what a city scene would have looked like before people constructed buildings all around. In addition, the book discusses farming, tunnels, dams, and lakes. The final page includes a combined glossary and index. This book will be helpful for early elementary social studies lessons, as well as for readers interested in a simple Spanish language book. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 7.
