Gr 4-8-These readable, informative texts are heavily supplemented by small color photos and footnote citations. Direct quotes appear throughout and rev up the somewhat staid and formal writing. Bentley looks at the Unser racing dynasty, Hubbard-Brown follows the rising careers of Terry and younger brother Bobby Labonte, and Pearce investigates the birth and growth of four famous speedways-Martinsville, Darlington, Daytona Beach, and Lowe's. All three books include "Did You Know?" pages on a variety of related topics. While not as exciting as the roar of 700-plus horses under the hood or the intoxicating aroma of hot exhausts and burning rubber, these titles will do nicely to perk up nonfiction collections.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
