Overview

Written for those involved with the use of animals in research, this book sets out to provide an overall guide to their legal obligations towards the animals in their care.

The main emphasis is on the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, but other legislation such as the Protection of Animals Act 1911, the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, the Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1968, the Animal Health Act 1981 and the European Belai Directive are also explained where relevant. The impact of European law, Codes of Practice, Guidelines, various statutory instruments and other legislation involving animals are referred to wherever necessary but efforts have been made to avoid superfluous detail.

Developed from a series of lectures presented by the author at the Institute of Animal Technology in the UK, this text provides an overall guide to the legal obligations (as defined in Britain) of all those involved with the use of animals in research towards the animals in their care. The main emphasis is on the UK's Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, which addresses such issues as personal and project licensing, training, codes of practice, re-use of animals, and record-keeping. Other European legislation is explained in relation to such topics as veterinary surgery, drugs in research, ecological aspects, the transport, import, and export of animals, and liability.
