Overview
On 27 February 1900, the Labour Representation Committee was formed to campaign for the election of working class representatives to parliament. One hundred years later Labour is in government with an overwhelming majority. This book is a unique opportunity both to celebrate and assess critically the Labour Party's role in shaping events of the 20th century. It brings together academics from a variety of disciplines to examine the history of the Party's development. Each chapter includes contributions in the form of commentary and analysis from former Labour leaders, cabinet ministers and backbench MPs.Editorials

Historians, political scientists, and sociologists share the current thinking about the evolution of the party over its first century. They consider trade unions, the parliamentary party, and Labour's electoral strategy along with broader policy issues such as international relations and welfare. The first section is a chronological series of essays; the last examines a number of selected themes. In a middle section, former Labour leaders, cabinet ministers, and backbench members of Parliament offer reflections on the recent regimes of Neil Kinnock, John Smith, and Tony Blair. Annotation c.
