Description:This is a review for the pharmacy boards for students who are about to take the NAPLEX exam. The previous edition was published in 2004.
Purpose:The purpose is to give a pharmacy student a self testing tool "to identify individual areas of strength and weakness, to suggest areas for further review, and to impart new concepts and other information useful to both the student and practicing pharmacist." For the most part, the book meets the author's objectives.
Audience:The book is specifically designed for pharmacy students who are preparing to take the NAPLEX exam.
Features:The seven chapters concentrate on specific disciplines. Two appendixes list frequently dispensed drugs and brand vs. generic names. The best thing about the book is that it comes with a CD-ROM that simulates the format of answering questions on the NAPLEX exam. Going through the questions, the student will be able to identify areas of weakness. The book includes explanations for the answers which is useful in understanding why the other choices are wrong. The shortcoming is that the book is not comprehensive in its coverage of subjects. Students will need to read further into particular areas where they lack knowledge.
Assessment:This book is very useful for pharmacy students studying for the boards. Regardless of the content, the review does give an idea of how the NAPLEX questions are asked on the CD-ROM. It should be used as a tool to figure out where individual weaknesses are. Other reviews, such as the Kaplan review which is offered as a one day course, bring in experts that review diseases or concepts in more detail than just going through questions and answers.

Gary Hall and Barry Reiss were professors at the Albany College of Pharmacy. For many years they also operated their own company offering review courses for the NAPLEX®, a company now part of Kaplan. They continue to be active in teaching review courses.
