Description:This textbook shows significant thought and consideration in the choice of topics, structure of the text, and relevant citations.
Purpose:The aim is to give a perspective of the nature and complexity of language and communication issues from birth to old age.
Audience:It is primarily designed for students. However, as concepts are well defined, and written at a novice level, the text is also appropriate for those in related professions as well as family members who want to learn more about a communication need.
Features:The text includes an impressive scope of populations, language theories, and assessment and intervention practices. Citations are current and reflect the state of the art in the field, at least in my area, child language. Examples of evaluation reports and objectives are provided to support concepts introduced in the text.
Assessment:Although the citations reflect current trends in the field, the examples and the practices tend to reflect earlier perspectives in the field. The text is a good framework for an introductory course in language and communication issues. When paired with an instructor who is able to delve more deeply into the issues and compare and contrast previous and current approaches, students are guaranteed a positive learning experience.
