Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on [title], held in Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy, March/April 1990. The quantum- mechanical part is mostly based on the operator-algebraic formulation of quantum mechanics and comprises quantum statistics of infinite systems. Statistical physics is the main topic in the other lectures of the School, with emphasis on the statistical features of macroscopic ("large") systems. These two areas are bridged by a series of lectures concerned with quantum Brownian motion and with quantum mechanical models of population and phase relaxation. Annotation c.
