Synopsis

Grint (leadership studies, Lancaster Management School, UK) examines the theoretical definitions and practical accomplishments of leadership. Starting with an historical overview, the author uses Gallie's notion of power as an "Essentially Contested Concept" as a principle explanation of the limited advances in defining leadership to date. He then establishes a four- part typology covering some of the most important varieties of leadership definition. Four major alternatives—leadership as person, as result, as position, as process—are treated in detail in separate chapters investigating what it is that makes leaders: who leaders are, what they achieve, where they operate, and how they get things done. Designed as a supplemental text for use in undergraduate and graduate business courses. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
