Overview

Since the publication of the first edition of this book over twenty-five years ago, geriatric medicine has seen enormous advances. It has become central to general practice and to emergency and general internal medicine in the hospital setting. With two new authors on the team, the sixth edition has been extensively altered and updated to include the many evidence-based advances in treatment that have occurred. The diseases that afflict older patients are clearly described and the ways in which these patients differ in presentation and management are explained. There are chapters dealing with the social and demographic aspects of ageing and the physiological changes that occur with age. This new edition takes into account the great changes in the organization of the care of older people and there is a more in-depth chapter on the increasingly important ethical and legal aspects of geriatric practice. The result is a text that remains the most compact yet comprehensive guide to geriatric medicine. It will appeal to medical students, junior doctors, general practitioners, nurses, and allied health professionals who want a concise introduction to the subject or an ideal revision companion.
