Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD(University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)Description: The fifth edition of this book in Blackwell's Lecture Notes series provides an outlined synopsis of geriatric medicine.
Purpose: Its purpose is to outline the practice of geriatric medicine and to overview the syndromes and organization of care for older persons.
Audience: The audience is the house officer and those primary care physicians seeking certification in geriatric medicine.
Features: This book is written specifically about the practice of geriatrics in the United Kingdom. It has useful appendixes on fitness for flying and various assessment instruments.
Assessment: This edition of a faithful companion is marred by numerous typographic errors and sloppy editing. Some chapters retain the elegant British style of medical writing; others, reduced to outline form, are choppy. Earlier editions of this work were exciting to read. This one is found wanting. It assumes a basic knowledge of medicine; therefore, medical students may be confused by what they find here.

Enjoying a rejuvenation unavailable to those it talks about, the undergraduate textbook and study guide for British certification candidates, first published in 1977, is here substantially updated from its 1993 edition. Succinct chapters give practical advice on the treatment and management of such conditions affecting the elderly as disability, falls and immobility, cardiovascular disorders, stroke, and death and dying.
