Synopsis

When Leo was less than seven weeks old, he became orphaned in the snowy Himalayan mountains in Pakistan. Snow leopards need their mothers during the first two years of their lives, but Leo was all alone. Luckily, the cub was rescued by a kind shepherd and his family, who hand-fed Leo and kept him safe. But Leo quickly grew too large and was given to Pakistani authorities, who also found themselves without the resources to help him. When the Wildlife Conservation Society learned of Leo's plight, they knew they had to do something. There was a special place that could save Leo:

the world famous Bronx Zoo in New York, the leading experts on caring for and breeding the critically endangered snow leopard. After a rescue that involved a treacherous, winding trek in the Himalayas, an extraordinary partnership between Pakistan and the United States, and the help of dozens of dedicated people, Leo is making the Bronx Zoo his new home, where he is thriving and learning how to be a snow leopard again.

Readers will delight to make a place in their hearts for Leo, one little snow leopard who inspired an international community to help save him. With breaktaking photographs, Leo the Snow Leopard is an extraordinary story about bravery, kindness, and the wonderful things that can happen when people come together to solve a problem.

The Hatkoffs--who have collaborated on such inspirational real-life animal tales as Owen & Mzee and Winter's Tail--tell the story of an orphaned snow leopard cub discovered in Pakistan's mountains. Leo is relocated to a national park before making his way to the Bronx Zoo in New York City. Despite the authors' attempts to inject tension into the story (there's an ill-timed landslide and, later, zookeepers worry about Leo's adjusting to another leopard), it doesn't have quite the emotional wallop of its predecessors. Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung

In northern Pakistan, a goat herder answers the orphaned snow leopard's mewing. The cub's mother was nowhere to be found and the cub was too young to survive on its own. Leo's true story begins as he is rescued and adopted by the goat herder's family. As Leo the snow leopard cub, grows, he is more than the family can handle. The family contacts the World Wildlife Fund for help because this wild yet adorable animal needs a suitable place to live. Read to find out what it took to find Leo such a place and to get him there. There are several color pictures that depict Leo at different stages of his life and his journey to his new home, the Bronx Zoo. Readers will be captivated by the beauty of the snow leopard. Younger children may need to listen to the story in parts because it is lengthy. At the back of the book, there is further information about snow leopards and animal conservation groups. Find out about the changing role of zoos and how they work to preserve endangered species. The story sets up excellent springboards for discussion concerning wildlife, endangered species, and conservation. This book is an excellent addition for a part of a collection or study unit. K-Gr 5—This inspirational picture book conveys the importance of caring and protecting the world's wildlife. The story recounts the rescue of an orphaned snow leopard cub from Pakistan, and how the goodwill between people and nations can make a difference in the survival of endangered species. Excellent photographic detail re-creates Leo's discovery by a goat herder, who in turn contacted the authorities when he got too large, and his cross-country adventure before being relocated to the Bronx Zoo in New York. Informative captions explain the dealings of the various organizations and governments for young readers and the back matter provides additional material about the snow leopard's habitat and behavior. Supplementary background on the Wildlife Conservation Society, zoos and captive breeding, endangered species, and international laws is appended.—Melissa Smith, Green Valley Library, Henderson, NV
