Children's Literature
Different breakfast food items are found between the covers of this book. The text provides introductory information about breakfast, such as the variety of breakfast foods and sources of the foods. Enhancing the text is the color photographs of a variety of breakfast foods from different cultures. To locate the different sections of the book, the table of contents lists the sections and the corresponding page numbers in the book. There is also an index to locate some subjects in the book. Young readers may need support with the informational features (section captions, speech bubbles, labels, and text) that are used in the layouts. Some of the labels and speech bubbles would serve a better purpose by providing more information about the food or topic. The text is brief but each section provides a springboard for the possibility of a rich discussion with children about breakfast and food sources. The notes for adults in the back of the book provide some ideas, guidance, and activities to do with children for further exploration into the topic of the morning meal and breakfast foods. This book is a part of the "Sparklers" series on the "Food We Eat" topic. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
