Children's Literature -
One of the "Sandcastle Let's Go" series, this book is intended for an audience of very early readers. Each double-page spread features a large photograph, sometimes with text overlaid, and one or two short sentences in relatively simple language. All of the pictures are associated with recreational vehicles: a car towing a large trailer, a family playing cards in front of their camper, etc. Two pictures are rather confusing. One has text explaining that a girl and her family are waiting under an awning for the rain to stop, but only a tiny edge of the awning is shown, making it nearly impossible to identify. The other shows a family in front of their "pop-up RV," but the photograph is taken from too close up to really show what a pop-up RV is. Unlike typical 32-page picture books, this slender volume has just 24 pages. The book includes a glossary, a short list of "Fast Facts," silhouettes of several types of recreational vehicles and a page with two simple questions for readers to consider. Likely to be appealing for toddlers who enjoy materials featuring transportation, this book does not provide enough useful information to make it an essential purchase for nonfiction collections serving early readers.
