School Library Journal

Gr 1-3-Three books comprised of simple sentences and colorful action photographs that show how to play popular children's games. Unfamiliar words related to the games are highlighted in bold. In Hopscotch, Rosa shows how to use chalk to draw the lines, explains that stones or sticks can be used as markers, and plays with her friends Mary and John. The photos show the players moving through the hopscotch squares. Jacks is written in the third person, with Petra demonstrating the rules of the game. In Jump Rope, Christina tells how she likes to jump alone or with friends. There are some exceptional action shots, including Christina in midair with the rope above her head, and two friends jumping together. Good choices to fulfill primary-grade nonfiction assignments.-Karen Land, Greenport Public School, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
