Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin

Twenty First Century Books offers information about various types of leukemia. A frightening cancer, leukemia is treatable and in the future, may be completely curable. Many patients have success with bone marrow and stem cell transplants. White blood cells multiply to fight infection, but they destroy red blood cells. Without red blood cells, the body experiences a loss of oxygen. Unlike other cancers, leukemia has no tumors. Doctors lack answers as to why one person gets leukemia and another does not. There are risk factors that might help a person to avoid it such as being exposed to radiation, using benzene and chemicals that kill pests and weeds. Leukemia's symptoms, how the disease is diagnosed, the types of leukemia and the effectiveness of stem cells are covered in several chapters. Chapter 8 shares thoughts regarding how one lives with leukemia. Suggested include life style changes such as diet, exercise, and the importance of receiving emotional support. Scattered throughout the book are heart tugging case studies. This book is recommended for every library and science class. Especially useful is a glossary of medical terms, an index, and further readings and websites. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
