This title in "The Way People Live" series is for the serious researcher or the really interested reader because the illustrations are in black and white. Color would have added the necessary element to make it an extremely good reference. However, the coverage is impressiveβgoing from The Rise of the Maya to a Culture Dies. Everything seems to be included, from family life to kings and ways of war. Filled with good information, chapter sub-headings show the way to specific topics. There are side/bottom panels of elaborate descriptive information on Writing, Maya Queens, Chocolate, etc. Then, again, this is for the serious researcher or the interested reader. The extensive "Notes" in the back of the book site all of the sources used. There is a "Works Consulted" section, "For Further Reading" and a lengthy index. 2005, Lucent Books/Thomson/Gale, Ages 10 to 15.βNaomi Butler
