Children's Literature - Nicole Peterson Davis

Candles have been around for many years, giving people a light source before electricity was invented. Candles also have a strong religious history, serving as a part of ceremonies in several different religions. Today, candles are not necessary as the primary source of light, but many people still like to use them to decorate homes, have candle lighting ceremonies, or enjoy another source of light. This book, one in the series called, "creative adventure guides," follows the pattern of the other books. Instead of just being a "how to" guide book, it explains the history of the craft or object and then gives directions to make the object. In this case, after explaining the history of candle making and how a candle works, the book explains how to make two very simple candles. The first is the beeswax candle that can be made by purchasing beeswax and then rolling it around a wick. The second is a milk carton candle that can be made by melting hot wax and then pouring it into a milk carton to let it cool. Both of these projects have step by step directions as well as pictures to show how to make the projects. Besides these projects, the book contains many hints about how to get the most use of a lit candle. This is a beautiful book that can be used by anyone interested in the art of candle making.
