Overview

The mighty Limpopo River bursts its banks. With her husband away working, Josette is forced to shelter with her children in their huge milkwood tree near their village. They cling for their lives, above the swirling waters, for three days. It is not until the fourth day that help arrives and a miracle happens.

The inspiring story of bravery, love and new life is based on a real incident that occurred during the devastating floods in Mozambique, Africa, in 2000. It is Jane Jolly's first picture book and is stunningly illustrated by award-winner Dee Huxley.

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer

Leroy, a young African boy, dances joyfully in the rain as a storm ends the drought. He is soon joined by his sister Aimee and their mother Jossette. Josette rubs her large tummy tenderly. Night comes and they go inside as the rain continues to fall and fall. Fighting the wind the next morning, the villagers climb a huge milkwood tree to escape the raging flood of water. Leroy, Aimee, and Jossette cling to the branches as the rain continues through the fourth day. The time comes for Jossette to give birth again. She clings to her newborn as a helicopter rescues her from her perch. The villagers are all plucked from the tree and taken to a safe, dry place where Leroy and Aimee gaze in wonderment at their new sister. Brightly colored, luminescent illustrations enhance this story based on an actual incident in Mozambique, Africa, in 2000. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
