Overview

Get to know one of the greatest presidents in American history, Abraham Lincoln, through his speeches, writings, and letters.

A renowned orator and writer, Lincoln believed that he must speak plainly so that every American regardless of their level of education of literacy, would understand the complicated issues affecting the country during his presidency. He overcame a very humble childhood to become our nation's sixteenth president and trailblazer in the fight to abolish slavery. In addition to the accomplishments of his lifetime, it is Lincoln's simple but eloquent words- in everything from the Emancipation Proclamation to compassionate and often humorous letters to family and friends- that are his legacy. They are proof of his unfailing dedication to the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice upon which America was founded.

In this comprehensive collection of Lincoln's writings, historian Milton Meltzer provides a rare personal glimpse into the life of the man behind the legendary words.

β€œEasily accessible . . . with a context specifically geared to those less knowledgeable about the historical period.”—The Bulletinβ€œFew students realize Lincoln’s contributions to our understanding of nationhood and freedom, and Meltzer’s analysis, based on solid historical scholarship, will help them see the scope of those contributions . . . A good addition to any library.”—School Library Journal

Children's Literature - Julia Oltmann

In this book, Meltzer outlines the life of Abraham Lincoln, organized as a compilation of his speeches and letters. The book follows Lincoln through the stages of his life in a non-traditional format: at the beginning of each chapter, there is an illustration of a significant figure who influenced him (including Thomas Jefferson, Sojourner Truth, and Walt Whitman). Meltzer then provides historical context for each subject and follows up with an appropriate passage from Lincoln's writing. The content covers information ranging from Lincoln's childhood to his relationships to his work as a leader of the country, with emphasis on his presidency and fight to abolish slavery. The author writes in an easy-to-read manner, but the content allows for an in-depth look at an important figure in American history. The illustrations were appropriately placed, and the layout is an interesting change of pace from conventional biographies. This book provides a fascinating personal look into Lincoln's life.
