Overview

Library media specialists, classroom teachers, and other educators who work with preschool through intermediate students will find this explanatory guide immensely helpful in making thematic connections to curriculum objectives that are well-supported by literature. In the frameworks, common elementary school topics—from Apples to Zoos—are used as building blocks for classroom workshop activities. Combine the blocks to support any theme or curricular unit. You can also select activities within each topic to integrate selected books and activities into the existing curriculum, such as focusing on Johnny Appleseed in the "A is for Apples" unit. The framework for each reading unit suggests resources and literature-related materials to match the curriculum, and gives ideas for integrating the resources into a particular theme. All of the frameworks are easily adapted to your students' interest level and learning goals.

VOYA - Julie Hudson

The greatest problem with Dr. Farmer's step-by-step manual is that if you are out there working in a public or school library-let's be real-you probably do not have the time to read it. If you are a very organized person with little boxes to check off every time you complete a task, perhaps this book will help you. It truly is filled with excellent guidelines, suggestions, and projects that would benefit anyone working with a student staff. Specifically, it offers methods of recruiting and training, followed by individual projects, complete with instructions on evaluating the student's performance. It is a valuable resource, but frankly, probably more beneficial when you are in library school studying to become a "super youth services librarian." It runs 183 pages in paperback oversize format, which includes a two-page bibliography. I will use this manual. But I will be more likely to open to a page, hand it to a trusted teen, and request that they deal with it! At one point the author advises us of the old KISS adage, translating it as, "Keep it simple staff!" Farmer would have done well to heed that advice. Biblio.

Elementary school library media specialists will be delighted with this addition to the Professional Growth series from Linworth. Literature Frameworks is filled with practical suggestions that can be implemented immediately in the curriculum. Recognizing the current trend toward interdisciplinary units, the author shows how to "plug in" literature to many of the common thematic units used in today's elementary schools. Each letter of the alphabet is tied to a theme for which the author provides a framework, or basic background information. For example, the "I Is for Ice Cream" chapter discusses the history of ice cream and the story of one particular ice cream company, Ben & Jerry's. It then suggests related activities, such as reading Beatrice Schenk de Regniers's How Joe the Bear and Sam the Mouse Got Together Lothrop, 1990 and creating a bar graph showing the relative popularity of different ice cream flavors. About a third of the book consists of reproducible pages to support the units. Also included are a subject index and an author-title index. This extremely practical book will be a well-used resource in any elementary school library.Jessica Foster, Fairfax County VA Public Schools
