Children's Literature

The number one becomes the jaunty hero of this tale of the search for a friend. He first meets two yellow pears, who send him away, reminding him that "2 is company, but 2 plus 1 is 3, and that would be a crowd." His quest leads him past 3 stuffed bears, 4 bees, 5 umbrellas, 6 ants, 7 mice, 8 stiff-backed books, and 9 frisky fish. In each case he is ignored or sent on his way, in a text that plays with both words and rhymes. Starting home, depressed and alone, Little 1 is invited to play by a bright red hoop. The hoop reminds him that if they stand together, they can pretend to be 10. And Little 1 can now have "a lot of fun" with his new friend. The power of Rand's graphic design has stood the test of time in this book originally published in 1962. Clean lines and unmodulated blocks of color (with no attempt made to keep the colors inside the line drawings) are all that are needed to tell this tale of rejection and final happy resolution. Young readers should easily identify with both this graphic approach and the hero himself. Don't miss the charming cover under the equally delightful dust jacket. 2006 (orig. 1962), Chronicle Books, Ages 4 to 8.
