Kettelcamp provides a brief history of U.S. space exploration before explaining how astronauts currently live and work in space and describing existing plans for manned and unmanned space exploration in the near future. The most interesting section of the book speculates on ways Earth colonists will prepare Mars so humans can live on the planet without extensive support facilities. Kettelcamp also suggests how the human anatomy will adapt to different environments. The book is a good introduction to the topic of living in space, and it is certain to inspire further reading on the subject. For that reason, the inclusion of source notes or additional readings would have been helpful. The volume is illustrated with black-and-white photographs.
