Beginning with the observation that since 1968 the United Methodist constitution has been pacifist but that Methodist practice has not conformed to this binding standard, Lang reflects on how theology has been pushed to the side. He demonstrates how ecclesiology has become ``market driven'' while the original genius of Methodism, a theology of discipline, largely disappears. Lang confronts the conflicting statements about war in Methodism, the reasons behind the 1968 statement, and the issue of the relationship between church and society. He concludes by advocating ``virtuous pacifism'' and gives suggestions for counseling conscientious objectors. Most of the reflections in this book are relevant in non-Methodist contexts as well. Therefore, the book is recommended for general religion collections.Book Details
