School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-Each of these books begins with a profile of an Olympic athlete; Amy Van Dyken has asthma, and Gary Hall Jr. has Type I diabetes. The texts then explain the respective diseases in simple language with short choppy sentences. Gray includes a description of the causes, signs and symptoms, treatment, and ongoing research. The color photographs relate to the texts and the diagrams are easy to understand. Alden R. Carter's I'm Tougher Than Asthma! (1996) and I'm Tougher Than Diabetes (2001, both Albert Whitman) give most of the same information in readable first-person dialogues. Both sets of books would be helpful for children who either have one of these diseases or know someone who does.-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
