This collection of short excerpts on "extreme travel" from previously published books takes the reader around the world and to the moon, kayaking through crocodile-infested waters in Timbuktu, skiing in Antarctica, dog-sledding in Alaska, and facing police interrogations in Zambia. Kuhne, a travel writer specializing in adventure travel, has compiled the writings of such distinguished authors as Geoffrey Moorhouse, Paul Theroux, Buzz Aldrin, Ted Conover, and Pico Iyer. Unfortunately, the selected excerpts, although always interesting and often gripping, do not read well as short pieces because they were meant to be read in the context of an entire book. Each excerpt begs for an introduction to set the scene and explain references. Larger travel collections probably already have several of the books excerpted and won't need to buy this. Smaller collections may find it useful, but readers will surely be asking for the full-length books after reading these excerpts. An optional purchase.--Linda M.
