Children's Literature - Jillian Hurst

If you have never had the opportunity to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo, take a look at this volume from the "Looking at Countries" series. This lesson includes maps, photographs, educational facts, and a glossary. Through simple but thorough text and plenty of pertinent images, readers will learn about the landscape, the weather, the people, and the life of the Congo. We learn about the bonobo ape, which lives only in the rain forests of the Congo, as well as the civil unrest of the nation. Students can read about the traditions, language, and music of the Congolese people. For example, more than two hundred ethic groups live in the Congo, most with their own languages and customs. The book points out the desolate conditions of the nation, but also highlights lighter entertainment, including soccer and cultural dance. Looking at the Congo would be helpful in the classroom, containing all the learning elements needed for a comprehensive country report. Reviewer: Jillian Hurst
