Synopsis
Love is in the air! Barbie takes a walk and sees lovebirds resting in a tree, a child blowing a kiss to Grandma, and other signs that love is all around her. The simple, rhyming text will make little girls want to step out with Barbie and step into reading on their own.
Children's Literature
Barbie is the star of this level 1 "Step into Reading" book. As usual, she doesn't look very realistic either on the cover or in the book's pages. She is a willowy blond who is out taking a walk. She looks like she is at least 16, but she must appeal to younger girls or the dolls and spin-off items like this book would not be so popular. Along her walk (water bottle in hand) she spies a pair of lovebirds, a young boy with his teddy bear, ducklings following their mama, a bunny on her front lawn, and fresh-baked cookies when she gets home. It is an idyllic world that shows a nice cross-section of boys, girls, ages, and ethnic groups. The text is simple; big type, easy words and picture clues are targeted to those who are beginning to read. This book is probably best as a personal purchase. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
