Overview

An immortal voice speaks on the greatest poetic theme in this English-language selection of the works of Rumi. Enriched by the lush calligraphic illustrations of Arabic artist Lassaâd Metoui, the poems bear remarkable power and emotional intensity, reflecting on the complexities of love, passion, pain, and faith. With exuberant imagination and rhythms that echo the ecstatic dance of the whirling dervishes, these songs of the spirit offer an intimate introduction to the poet's genius, as well as a sublime meditation on the mysteries of love.

About the Author, Rumi

Rumi, the great bard of Sufism, was born in Persia in 1211. He became one the greatest poets and spiritual thinkers of his era, composing thousands of poems that continue to be chanted on pilgrimages and at religious ceremonies. A celebrated mystic, Rumi founded the Mevlevi order, which spread throughout the Islamic world after his death in 1273. Lassaâd Metoui, a Tunisian by birth, exhibits widely and lectures on Arabic and Latin calligraphy. Jean-Claude Carriere is best known for his work as a screenwriter and collaborator with director Luis Buñuel; he is also the author of acclaimed works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Power of Buddhism, cowritten with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
