Synopsis

Gameboard. It's the first day of school! But Lucky the puppy is worried-what will he do all day while his boy is in school? Emergent readers will be eager to find out how Lucky spends his day in this perfect for back-to-school level 1 book.

Children's Literature

As a Level 1 book for preschool through first grade, the story is about Lucky the dog and his adventures with other dogs while "his boy" spends his first day at school. It is one of the publisher's "All Aboard Reading" series, and the controlled vocabulary is just the right challenge for a beginning reader with such dog words as chase and wag. The illustrations are vivid and colorful and enhance the simple story well. Children may question a group of dogs playing in the park alone in this day of leash laws. The title implies that the dog "goes" to school. Lucky only walks to the school. It's a small point but one that five-year-old children spot easily. 2001, Grosset & Dunlap, $3.99. Ages 4 to 6.
