Gr 7-Up Introductory chapters cover William Shakespeare's early life, his education, his marriage to Anne Hathaway, his life in London, the Globe Theatre, and his later years. There is also discussion about the history, plot, characters, and themes of Macbeth as well as summaries of selected acts and scenes. Analysis focuses on four themes: whether or not Macbeth is a tragic hero, the role of fate, what Shakespeare was saying about ambition, and his message in regard to social stratification and the Chain of Being. Notes on the chapters, an "Appendix of Criticism," suggestions for essays on Macbeth, an annotated bibliography, and an index complete the book. Poor- to average-quality black-and-white reproductions, photos, and movie stills illustrate the volume. Faith Nostbakken's Understanding Macbeth (Greenwood, 1997) is a more comprehensive title on the topic for readers with some background knowledge of Shakespeare. With its simple format and clear writing, Thrasher's book will appeal to younger students or those who are intimidated by literary assignments. -Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
