Children's Literature
Eight year-old Jo Jo Wigman lives in a house built on top of a top-secret lab where scientists try to create agents of justice to fight crime. One day a pickle falls into the experiment, and the Magic Pickle emerges. Jo Jo and the Magic Pickle form a friendship when she discovers that he lives in the lab beneath her room. What follows is an adventure starring the Magic Pickle and Jo Jo, complemented by caricature-style illustrations that keep the story lighthearted. The Magic Pickle worries about a villain on the loose, the Egg Poacher, and fears that he has gone to the zoo to enlist the Kiwis in the evil group, the Brotherhood of Evil Produce. On a school trip to the zoo the next day, Jo Jo and her friend Ellen wander the zoo as Jo Jo looks for the Egg Poacher. On their trip through the zoo, they learn about different animals, information that later helps them catch the Egg Poacher. The black-and-white illustrations help the author show the emotion and action of each character. The book contains obscure information about animals that young readers will likely not already know, inspiring curiosity about these creatures. This book is one volume in the "Magic Pickle" series of graphic novels. Reviewer: Alex Urban
