Before I read this biography, all I knew of Mahalia Jackson was the fact that she was a gospel singer. Thanks are due Barbara Kramer for the depth of her study and for the personal look into the life of a truly great singer and civil rights leader. Interesting facts about Mrs. Jackson include performing at the White House, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and having a stamp issued in her honor by the U.S. Postal Service. This thoroughness of this book makes it a great resource for students. It also reveals to students the treatment and prejudices even toward black celebrities. In spite of her popularity and her wealth, she was threatened for buying a home in a white community of Chicago. Kramer includes a chronology of Mahalia Jackson's life, a selected discography, and chapter notes which verify the facts and events in her life. This biography is included in the "African-American Biographies" series. 2003, Enslow Publishers, Ages 8 to 12.βAnn Sanger
