Pop artists turn popular things and people into art. Brightly colored pages with equally bright works of art by children and famous pop artists make this book attractive. By studying the famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol, children are introduced to the art of color printing using Styrofoam meat-packing trays, a pencil, ink, and paper. The blown up cartoons of Roy Lichtenstein are used to inspire children to paint pictures of popular products, cartoon characters, and to make crayon rubbings. A map by Jasper Johns in colors that overlap the states is a catalyst for further exploration. Stencils and sponge painting are used to create unusual designs of letters and flags. A picture using photos and newspaper clippings and paint by Robert Rauschenberg is used to encourage children to make collages. Claes Oldenburg's giant soft sculptures give impetus to children's sculptures in cloth and clay. Life-sized sculptures in plaster by George Segal lead to the use of plaster gauze with children. Short biographies of the six artists are included. Although children will enjoy the creativity and crafts, this book validates this type of art mainly by the fact that the artists became rich and famous.School Library Journal

Raimondo introduces six prominent Pop artists—Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, and George Segal. First she describes each man's creative technique, and then she invites readers to observe one of their well-known works by asking questions such as, "How do you think he used his brush?" Finally, she suggests projects that imitate the artists' methods. Most of the required materials can be found around the house or are readily available at a craft store, and written instructions for each project are easy to follow. The text is printed in a variety of fonts on brightly colored pages. Frequent words in bold and contrasting polygon text boxes might be distracting to some readers. Most of the illustrations are color photographs of art projects made by children and the author rather than pictures of the artists' works. Biographical information is limited to a paragraph about each artist on the final spread; as a result, this book doesn't stand alone as an introduction to the period, but is a good companion to more extensive overviews such as Anne Fitzpatrick's Late Modernism (Creative Education, 2005).
